This page explains what ConfiSense does, who can use it, how to open it, and how to find your way around.
What is ConfiSense?
ConfiSense is a Jira Cloud app for Jira admins. It reads your Jira configuration and shows you:
- what exists
- where each item is used
- which items look the same
- what a change would affect
ConfiSense gives you evidence. You still decide what to change. An item that looks the same as another, or that nothing uses, is not always a problem. It may be needed later or kept on purpose.
What ConfiSense looks at
ConfiSense analyses six areas of Jira configuration:
| Area | What you can learn |
|---|---|
| Workflows | Which workflows are identical or nearly identical, which are unique, which are not used, and where each one is used. You can also consolidate identical workflows and roll the change back. |
| Fields | Your custom fields, which ones share a name and type, when each last had a value set, and what uses each field (screens, filters, boards and workflow rules). |
| Work item types | Which work item types are in use or unused, and the schemes and projects that use each type. |
| Screens | Screens with the same tabs and fields, and whether each screen really reaches a project. |
| Permissions | Permission schemes with the same permission grants, and which schemes projects use. |
| Notifications | Notification schemes with the same events and recipient rules, and which schemes projects use. |
Some areas go deeper than others. Workflows has the most features, including guided consolidation. The other areas show evidence only.
Who can use it
- Jira Cloud. ConfiSense runs inside Jira Cloud.
- Jira administrators only. You need the global Administer Jira permission. Project admin is not enough.
- Confluence (optional). ConfiSense can publish its report to a Confluence space.
Open ConfiSense
- In Jira, select Settings (the gear icon), then Apps.
- In the sidebar, under Apps, select ConfiSense.
The first time you open it
ConfiSense opens on Home. If Home shows no results yet, select Analyse Health to run the first analysis.
- Analysis only reads your configuration. Nothing in Jira changes.
- It runs in the background, so you can leave the page.
- On Home, each area has a card. Its status shows Complete when that area is done.
How long it takes depends on the size of your site.
Find your way around
The ConfiSense bar contains Home, Analysis, Config Explorer, Ownership, Quickstart and App Settings.
| Section | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Home | Your Optimisation score, a score for each area, a quick summary of what needs attention, and the report you can publish or download. |
| Analysis | One page per area: Workflows, Fields, Work item types, Screens, Permissions and Notifications. |
| Config Explorer | Search any analysed item and see where it is used. |
| Ownership | The Ownership Manager, for changing who owns filters and dashboards. |
| Quickstart | A short in-app checklist (see below). |
| App Settings | Scheduled scans, the Confluence space for reports, and support downloads. |
What reads and what changes
| What you do | Effect |
|---|---|
| Analysis, Config Explorer, comparisons, usage and impact views | Read only. Nothing in Jira changes. |
| Workflow consolidation and rollback | Changes Jira. Changes which workflows a workflow scheme uses. Asks you to confirm first. |
| Ownership transfer | Changes Jira. Changes the owner of the filters and dashboards you pick. Asks you to confirm first. |
| Publish report | Writes to Confluence. Creates or updates a ConfiSense page in your chosen Confluence space. Does not change Jira. |
| Review notes and decisions, scan schedule | Saved in ConfiSense. Does not change Jira. |
The Fields page has a Consolidate button and the Permissions page has How to consolidate, but neither changes Jira. They show the steps you would follow by hand in Jira.
Quickstart
The Quickstart button opens a short checklist on the right. It opens on its own on a new install. You can reopen it from App Settings.
The checklist has eight steps:
- Analyse your site.
- Open Workflows.
- Look at duplicate workflow groups.
- Consolidate a group.
- Roll the change back.
- Search in Config Explorer.
- Publish or download the report.
- Set a schedule and a Confluence space.
It is a quick tour, not a list of everything ConfiSense does.
Ask Rovo
If your site uses Rovo, ConfiSense adds a read-only agent called ConfiSense Governance Advisor. You can ask it questions such as “How healthy is this Jira instance?” or “If I delete a screen, what breaks?”. It answers from ConfiSense’s last analysis and cannot change Jira. It answers Jira administrators only.
